Farewell helped the community acknowledge that leaving was neither failure nor a gap that had to be hidden. People leave projects and networks, or leave life itself; the space they leave cannot be filled forever by remembrance. Farewell gave people room to give thanks, say goodbye, and keep working. It also let the next person taking over know they were not acting as someone who had left.
