What is RGB?

RGB brings digital assets and private contract state to Bitcoin through client-side validation, anchored by Bitcoin and extendable via Lightning.

UPDATED

RGB is not another blockchain

RGB brings digital assets and private contract state to Bitcoin through client-side validation. Bitcoin anchors commitments and helps prevent double spending. Participants keep and validate the state history relevant to them; contract data is exchanged between participants rather than published in full to a public chain.

RGB in 60 seconds

  • Bitcoin: RGB adds no blockchain or validator set; Bitcoin remains the publication and anti-double-spend layer.
  • Client-side validation: participants check relevant contract data, and the receiver independently validates the history needed to accept a state.
  • Single-use seals: RGB uses Bitcoin UTXOs as single-use seals. Spending the UTXO closes the current seal and anchors the next state.
  • Consignment: a receiver gets the contract or transfer data needed to validate a state transition locally.
  • Lightning: compatible nodes can open asset channels and route RGB payments. Support depends on the wallet, node stack, and product implementation.
